Take the annual residents’ survey
The Ford’s Colony HOA has sent out a link to its annual residents’ satisfaction survey.
The board of directors would like to hear from as many Ford’s Colony residents as it can regarding its performance and areas of improvement that should be addressed moving forward.
The survey is brief and confidential — and more than one person in a household may respond.
The link to the survey is here. Responses are being accepted until Sept. 30. A summary of results will be issued after responses are compiled.

Nature trail reopens with new entrance
Ford’s Colony has announced the new entrance to the nature trail is now open off of Westbury Hills.
The old entrance near the pond was subject to flood damage and had to be permanently closed. The crosswalk from the leisure trail on Williamsburg West to Westbury Hills makes the new route, which is well-marked, more accessible.
It also is expected to reduce maintenance costs for the nature trail.
Facility improvements continue
With the slowdown ongoing, Ford’s Colony has taken the opportunity to make numerous improvements and renovations to various facilities in the community.
These include:
- remodeling of the swim and tennis club’s interior with new lighting, wallpaper and paint, as well as new kitchen appliances.
- the very popular pickleball courts are being transformed into six permanent courts with new posts and nets.

- maintenance on the tennis courts and pergola has been completed.
- the swim and tennis club’s 32-year-old pool is getting coping stones, tiles and an upgraded replacement liner made of fiberglass.
- the Community Services Building has been outfitted with new gutters and siding paint.
- expansion of the fencing in the maintenance area will start soon to relieve parking issues in front of the Community Services Building.
- expansion of fencing for the RV/boat storage area will be scheduled for the summer to increase storage capacity.
The Ford’s Colony HOA board said it will reassess at its May 21 meeting when community facilities can reopen, based on guidance from the state department of health and in compliance with the governor’s executive orders at that time.

What’s in a name? John Pott
The names of Ford’s Colony’s streets are an intriguing mix of golf courses from around the country, and world, and of Virginia historic figures. Occasionally, I’ll introduce you to an interesting street name and the story behind it . . . which brings me to “John Pott.”

A main thoroughfare into Ford’s Colony off of Longhill Road, the street is named for the noteworthy physician and Colonial governor of the Jamestown Settlement. Dr. Pott, Oxford-educated, arrived Jamestown with his wife Elizabeth in 1619. He evidently had an interesting few years thereafter.
First, he was accused of poisoning 200 Native Americans in 1623 in retaliation for a massacre of colonists; he was ultimately cleared of the charge and his seat on the Governor’s Council was restored.
Pott himself was installed as governor in 1629, but in 1630 he was convicted of stealing livestock. His skills as a physician, however, were so crucial to the colony that the next governor, Sir John Harvey, petitioned England for Pott’s pardon. It was granted, he regained his estate known as “Harrop” – evidently located in what is now Williamsburg – and continued his medical work.
“As physician, leader and revolutionary, Dr. John Pott served as a vital force in shaping the history of Jamestown colony,” according to an article from the New York Academy of Medicine.
Now you know.
Third-Quarter ‘Market Watch’ numbers are in
Sales statistics I compile for my quarterly “Market Watch” update show the sale of 103 homes (including townhomes and condos) had closed in Ford’s Colony through Sept. 30.
The average sold price in Ford’s Colony through the third quarter of 2019 was $499,698, at 94.2 percent of the original list price. (The range of sales prices in the third quarter alone was $278,000 to $770,000.)
FEATURED HOME
104 Worksop
3 Bedroom | 3 Bath | 2,209 SQ FT
Now offered at $370,000!

Other key statistics through Sept. 30:
- Average months supply of inventory – 6.8
- Average price per square foot — $148
- Average days on the market – 81.1 (down from 94 through the second quarter)
In all 40 homes closed in the third quarter – 17 in July, 15 in August and eight in September.
I very much appreciate the kind words of my friend and client John Urban, whose sale closed during the third quarter: “For a major happening in your life you want a qualified, experienced professional – that is what Deelyn and her team bring to the table. With Deelyn as your representative — from the original walk through to the staging, to her extraordinary marketing and onto the closing negotiation — you are always in available good hands. She gets the job done!”
Thank you, John!
