Work to improve safety at the intersection of News and Centerville Roads is set to begin, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. And that IS good news for Ford’s Colony residents who traverse that intersection just outside of the neighborhood.
Planned improvements include installing a traffic light, a right-turn lane from News onto Centerville, and left- and right-hand turn lanes off of Centerville.
The light and new turn lanes are designed to address current and future capacity issues at that intersection. VDOT predicts traffic on both roads will increase approximately 25 percent over the next 20 years.
More information about the project can be found here.
The beauty of turning and falling leaves gives us autumn enjoyment . . . until we look around and wonder what to do with all those turned and fallen leaves on the lawn.
Well, James City County is offering a free option. The county will provide curbside leaf collection between Dec. 6 and Dec. 13 in Ford’s Colony.
County trucks will circulate through Ford’s Colony for one round of leaf collection — and then off to the dump — during that time. NOTE: Leaves must be secured in clear bags no larger than lawn or leaf bags, i.e. no more than 40 gallons. Please gather your leaves and have your bags on the curb by 8 a.m. Dec. 6.
Be sure to not include things like trimmed branches, grass clippings and other yard debris, however, as that will not be accepted. You can check the county website for more information on the free leaf pickup.
The popular Ford’s Colony Dance Band will perform on the Williamsburg Regional Library Theatre Stage on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Dewey Decibel Concert Series.
The band will salute big-band royalty with its “Tribute to Count Basie,” a 90-minute set featuring favorites like “April in Paris,” “Shiny Stockings,” “Cute,” “Hay Burner” and “Jive at Five.” Admission is free, but a free-will donation will be taken to benefit the band. You can follow the band via its Facebook page.
The Dewey Decibel Concert Series is in its 20th anniversary season. It offers an eclectic mix of popular jazz, bluegrass, folk, Americana and classical music acts. All shows are at the Williamsburg Regional Library.
Future 2019 shows are Peninsula Concert Band, Holiday Concert Dec. 3; the Jae Sinnett Zero to 60 Quartet Christmas Special, Dec. 13; and the LCV Project, An Acoustic Christmas Dec. 19

How was the real estate market at the end of the first quarter of 2016?
The Ford’s Colony market saw an increase in properties going under contract when comparing March 2015 to March 2016. In 2015, 15 listings went under contract while 19 went under contract this past March, 2016. Active inventory was fairly constant ; March 2015 ended with 140 active listings and March 2016 with 139 active listings. The best news was an increase in median sold values. Closed median sold values jumped to $521,500 in March 2016 from $450,000 in March 2015.
Overall, a better start to our Ford’s Colony market than we have seen in many years. Homes priced below $500k in FC in theory are in a “balanced” market — neither a buyer’s or seller’s market. It appears we should see that “balance” push up in price point as we continue into 2016.
