Come for Coffee with the Board

Make a note of the next “Coffee with the Board” event to be held Monday, March 16 at the community services building.

Coffee with the Board meetings are planned every other month in 2020. The March meeting will focus on, but not be limited to, the concerns of Ford’s Colony families with minor children. The meeting will be hosted by Carmen Hegge-Kleiser, vice-president of the Ford’s Colony Homeowners’ Association board of directors.

These meetings are held in a smaller room better for conversation, so space is limited. Please contact Carmen to make a reservation. Carmen.fchoabod@cox.net.

Say ‘No’ to old smoke detectors

When Daylight Saving Time (blessedly) arrives March 8, why not take it as a cue to test and possibly swap out your home’s smoke detectors?

You know it’s time to change the batteries by the sometimes annoying, but always necessary, “chirp” that emits from a power-drained device. But when to completely upgrade a smoke detector?

Ah, that answer is less obvious.

The standard endorsed by FEMA is every 10 years. And unless you have the actual purchase receipt or a faultless memory, you need to physically remove the detector from the ceiling and check the manufacture date on the back of it.

If it’s been 10 years since the device was made, swap it out for a brand new one to be certain it is in peak condition. It’s a small chore for great peace of mind. And then, don’t forget to check the batteries every month as well.

Push the “test” button, so your home safely passes with flying colors.

Take a look inside!

News Road safety improvements

Work to improve safety at the intersection of News and Centerville Roads is set to begin, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. And that IS good news for Ford’s Colony residents who traverse that intersection just outside of the neighborhood.

Planned improvements include installing a traffic light, a right-turn lane from News onto Centerville, and left- and right-hand turn lanes off of Centerville.

The light and new turn lanes are designed to address current and future capacity issues at that intersection. VDOT predicts traffic on both roads will increase approximately 25 percent over the next 20 years.

More information about the project can be found here.

Get ready for free bagged-leaf collection

Pretty leaves

The beauty of turning and falling leaves gives us autumn enjoyment . . . until we look around and wonder what to do with all those turned and fallen leaves on the lawn.

Well, James City County is offering a free option. The county will provide curbside leaf collection between Dec. 6 and Dec. 13 in Ford’s Colony.

County trucks will circulate through Ford’s Colony for one round of leaf collection — and then off to the dump — during that time. NOTE: Leaves must be secured in clear bags no larger than lawn or leaf bags, i.e. no more than 40 gallons. Please gather your leaves and have your bags on the curb by 8 a.m. Dec. 6.

Be sure to not include things like trimmed branches, grass clippings and other yard debris, however, as that will not be accepted. You can check the county website for more information on the free leaf pickup.

FC Dance Band honors Count Basie

You can follow the band via its Facebook page.

The Dewey Decibel Concert Series is in its 20th anniversary season. It offers an eclectic mix of popular jazz, bluegrass, folk, Americana and classical music acts. All shows are at the Williamsburg Regional Library.

Always a good day to honor our Vets

My late father was a military veteran; my husband’s father as well. Most families are connected to the United States military in some way — fathers, mothers, sons and daughters — and know very much first-hand the service and sacrifice involved in protecting our great country.

This weekend, and especially Veterans’ Day on Monday, let’s all pause to contemplate — and appreciate — in our own way the dedication and courage of America’s military defenders, past, present and future.

It’s the least thanks we can give for those who give so much of themselves for us.
