Vote Williamsburg for Best Small Town in the South

Williamsburg has been recognized yet again as a great place to live and to visit.

As part of its search for the “Best of the South 2020,” Southern Living magazine has nominated Williamsburg for the title of “Best Small Town.”

There are 32 other towns on the list, located throughout the south and as far west as Oklahoma. Besides Williamsburg, however, only Fredericksburg was nominated from Virginia.

The magazine is polling readers for their favorites among such diverse and fun things as bars, restaurants, new and historic hotels, barbecue joints, resorts and chefs.

Jill Pongonis, media relations manager for the Williamsburg Tourism Council, told the WY Daily the nomination alone significantly raises the city’s profile.

“They survey about 65,000 readers so the impact of the voters is definitely awareness and reaching a target market that is interested in this destination,” she said. “We do try to get our public relations team out there to . . . work with travel writers to expose them to the wonderful experiences they have here. It’s not by chance, it’s a collaborative effort.”

You can take the magazine’s online survey as often as you wish. Voters are eligible to win a grand prize of $2,500 for doing so. Voting is open until Sept. 16.

New recycling: Remember these rules

With a new curbside recycling company, TFC Recycling, stepping in July 1 in James City County, it’s a good time to revisit some helpful rules of recycling to make the process go smoothly.

The most important of all is knowing what is acceptable for the recycling program and what is not, so let this info from the county’s website help:

ACCEPTABLE — plastic bottles and jugs, cardboard, mixed paper, metal cans, glass bottles and jars. All other items are considered contamination to the recycling stream.

Remember, it is NOT necessary to crush cans before placing them in the recycling bin. Yes, that saves space, but the Aluminum Association notes crushing cans may actually make cans harder to sort at the recycling center.

Plastic jugs MAY be crushed, and metal bottle caps are OK. Plastic caps are not.

NOT ACCEPTABLE: plastic bags! (Take them to a grocery store that has marked bins for plastic bags out front), light bulbs, stretch wrap, pizza boxes, food waste, yard waste, diapers (please, no!) and long items that tangle such as rope, carpet, hoses, wire and Christmas lights.

Bins with visible contaminants will not be emptied. Also, the county asks that you do not leave items such as cardboard on the curb outside of the bin. It won’t be picked up.

If you haven’t received your new bin, it should arrive this week.

Residents may recycle for free through September. They may opt-out of the monthly $7 program as of October 1.

The county has produced this video to help explain the recycling program.

Deelyn is special guest on William and Mary coach’s show

Deelyn shared local real-estate insight with Jay Colley (left) and William and Mary basketball coach Tony Shaver on Monday night, Jan. 21.

Deelyn appeared as a special radio guest Monday, Jan. 21 on the “Chesapeake Bank Tony Shaver Show” featuring William and Mary’s basketball coach Tony Shaver.

The show was aired live from Paul’s Deli on 92.3 FM, 107.9 Bach FM and was streamed online at TribeAthletics.com. Deelyn represented the show’s “community partner” for the evening, Liz Moore and Associates.

Interviewed by Jay Colley, the voice of William and Mary athletics, Deelyn cited the influence of Liz Moore herself as the No. 1 market advantage enjoyed by LMA clients looking to sell or buy a home.

“Liz has demonstrated in more than one real-estate market that she’s a marketing genius and a real-estate guru,” Deelyn said.

Deelyn added that expectations are bright for the Williamsburg real-estate market in 2019.

“We’re expecting another good year for real estate; not crazy up and not crazy down, just steady,” Deelyn said. “Our biggest challenge this year will be a lack of inventory in the lower price points, so it’s a great time to consider selling if you’ve been on the fence.”

Deelyn’s interview on “The Chesapeake Bank Tony Shaver Show” can be heard here, starting at time marker 27:30.
