Vote for Cafe Provencal as USA’s best winery restaurant

Here in Williamsburg, we live near one of the finest winery restaurants in the United States. Is it THE best? We’ll soon find out!

Café Provençal at Williamsburg Winery is among 20 similar venues nominated by USA Today as the nation’s best winery restaurant.

Readers, patrons and especially food and wine lovers may vote once a day for Cafe Provencal as their favorite over the next couple weeks.Voting in the contest — officially USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Award — ends Monday, Aug. 12. The winners will be announced Friday, Aug. 23 — and then later on USA Today. The place to vote is here.

USA Today’s nomination reads: “Chef David McClure takes the helm at Café Provençal at Williamsburg Winery with a menu highlighting local farmers, watermen and “agri-artisans.” This farm-to-farm menu includes dishes like ham and pea soup made with Edwards Country Ham, butter-poached lobster tail salad, seared diver scallops with local purple rice and grilled swordfish with lemon basil polenta and a mustard cream sauce.”

Yum, to all of that!

Williamsburg again is ranked a top travel destination

The Williamsburg Yorktown Daily (WYDaily) newspaper reports that Williamsburg remains one of the best travel destinations in the country, according to Travel + Leisure magazine.

The magazine ranks Williamsburg at No. 13 on its recently released top-15 list of American destinations alongside cities such as Honolulu, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and Austin.

Travel + Leisure bases its ratings on responses it receives from readers about their travel experiences. Travelers ranks cities on sights, landmarks, culture, cuisine, shopping and overall value.

Williamsburg scored 80.51 points, while No. 15 Washington, D.C. scored 80.09. Charleston, S.C., with 87.04 points, was the highest-ranked city.

Williamsburg also appeared on another Travel + Leisure list last spring: the best places to travel to in July. Not to be outdone, the New York Times also featured Williamsburg and the Historic Triangle in its “52 places to Go in 2019” list.

The latter article highlighted the events, still ongoing, surrounding the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown’s first legislative assembly in the New World. Take a bow, Williamsburg!

Ford’s Colony hosts historic national golf qualifying tournament

Ford’s Colony’s status as a premier golf-course community was on display again recently when it hosted a qualifying tournament for the 119thU.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.

When it was over, the third-youngest player to ever qualify for the women’s amateur – 11-year-old Gianna Clemente — was among three women to make the field for the Aug. 5 event to be held in Mississippi.

Clemente is from Warren, Ohio. The other players to qualify also came from out of town, Ohio State’s Aneka Seumanutafa and University of Wisconsin golfer Tracy Lee.

The qualifying event received plenty of national coverage, including in USA Today, CBS Sports and Golf Digest.

Ford’s Colony boasts three championship golf courses — Blue Heron, Marsh Hawk and Blackheath — that offer golfers of any age and ability a first-class experience.
