Get ready for free bagged-leaf collection

Pretty leaves

The beauty of turning and falling leaves gives us autumn enjoyment . . . until we look around and wonder what to do with all those turned and fallen leaves on the lawn.

Well, James City County is offering a free option. The county will provide curbside leaf collection between Dec. 6 and Dec. 13 in Ford’s Colony.

County trucks will circulate through Ford’s Colony for one round of leaf collection — and then off to the dump — during that time. NOTE: Leaves must be secured in clear bags no larger than lawn or leaf bags, i.e. no more than 40 gallons. Please gather your leaves and have your bags on the curb by 8 a.m. Dec. 6.

Be sure to not include things like trimmed branches, grass clippings and other yard debris, however, as that will not be accepted. You can check the county website for more information on the free leaf pickup.

What’s in a name? John Pott

The names of Ford’s Colony’s streets are an intriguing mix of golf courses from around the country, and world, and of Virginia historic figures. Occasionally, I’ll introduce you to an interesting street name and the story behind it . . . which brings me to “John Pott.”

A main thoroughfare into Ford’s Colony off of Longhill Road, the street is named for the noteworthy physician and Colonial governor of the Jamestown Settlement. Dr. Pott, Oxford-educated, arrived Jamestown with his wife Elizabeth in 1619. He evidently had an interesting few years thereafter.

First, he was accused of poisoning 200 Native Americans in 1623 in retaliation for a massacre of colonists; he was ultimately cleared of the charge and his seat on the Governor’s Council was restored.

Pott himself was installed as governor in 1629, but in 1630 he was convicted of stealing livestock. His skills as a physician, however, were so crucial to the colony that the next governor, Sir John Harvey, petitioned England for Pott’s pardon. It was granted, he regained his estate known as “Harrop” – evidently located in what is now Williamsburg – and continued his medical work.

“As physician, leader and revolutionary, Dr. John Pott served as a vital force in shaping the history of Jamestown colony,” according to an article from the New York Academy of Medicine.

Now you know.

Always a good day to honor our Vets

My late father was a military veteran; my husband’s father as well. Most families are connected to the United States military in some way — fathers, mothers, sons and daughters — and know very much first-hand the service and sacrifice involved in protecting our great country.

This weekend, and especially Veterans’ Day on Monday, let’s all pause to contemplate — and appreciate — in our own way the dedication and courage of America’s military defenders, past, present and future.

It’s the least thanks we can give for those who give so much of themselves for us.

Everyday gratitude

Happy November! Halloween-candy hangover notwithstanding, it’s a beautiful weather start to a wonderful month, the gateway to the warmth and gratitude of the holidays.

As a 21-year resident of Ford’s Colony, I am mindful — especially during this time of reflection — of the simple joys of our wonderful neighborhood.

The turning of trees and the glint of sun through autumn shadows. A bench seat by a duck pond, collar upturned on a crisp afternoon. Easy dog-walks as dawn breaks. Smiling nods to neighbors known and soon-to-be-met. Jogging trails and loops with friends, lost in conversation, and riding bikes over gently rolling hills.

I appreciate Ford’s Colony so much. And as a Realtor, I love showing folks interested in moving to “our home” what we already know: Ford’s Colony is a great place to live.

Please contact me (deelyn@lizmoore.com) if you or someone you know is interested in buying or selling a home in Ford’s Colony. Thanks, and I hope you enjoy a wonderful November with family and friends.
